PoliZ Life- Tosin's Inflation Story

Rising Inflation: I can barely survive on my salary- Tosin

On today’s edition of PoliZ Life, Tosin from Lagos shares how inflation is hitting hard. She breaks down how the rising prices of everything—from food to transportation—are making it tough to keep up.

With PoliZ Life, we highlight stories like these to show how policy and government decisions impact the everyday lives of Nigerian youths.

I had plans for my life after graduation. But, I figured I should register as an optometrist first, then save up for my future career path.

I graduated in 2023 after numerous ASUU strikes and I finally got an internship as an optometrist at a private clinic in Lagos.

Now I earn a salary which I had believed could at least cover the basics, leaving me with something to “flex with.” But unfortunately, Nigeria in 2020 isn’t the Nigeria of today. I was not exempted from the hardship of Nigeria.

I can barely sustain my feeding and transport myself to work with just my salary. Don’t get me started with hair extension prices. The prices all doubled up.

Now, right after I get my salary, I clear one bill after another. I set aside over 50k for my transport and barely survive on the rest. It’s the ghetto, really.

With the recent hike in electricity tariff, the lack of fuel, and rising food prices, I’ve had to cut costs in every part of my life.

Tosin’s story shows how inflation is a major issue, and why things need to get better. Prices are climbing, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to manage day-to-day expenses.
